General Dentistry

At Able Denture & Implant Clinic, we care just as much about future-proofing your teeth as we do about fixing them. We will keep your mouth healthy and provide you with expert advice to prevent oral health problems before they arise, saving you money on expensive restorative treatment later down the line.

Preventative dentistry

We stand by the tried and tested motto that ‘prevention is always better than cure.’ Many severe dental conditions result from poor oral health – preventative dentistry acts as early intervention, keeping your mouth healthy and reducing your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, mouth cancer and tooth loss.

Regular, six-monthly check-ups and hygiene appointments are the best way to keep your mouth in great shape. We will look for early signs of gum disease and tooth decay during your routine appointment, alongside discussing any oral health issues and screening for mouth cancer.

Preventative dentistry is a joint effort – what you do at home is just as important as what we do in the surgery! We'll give you tips on brushing, flossing, and your diet to help you maintain a healthy mouth in-between check-ups and hygiene appointments.

Keeping your mouth healthy

Although six-monthly check-ups and hygiene appointments are fundamental to your oral health, there is a lot you can do to keep your teeth and gums in good condition between visits. Brushing and flossing twice a day for two minutes should be a staple part of your routine to remove plaque before it hardens into tartar and causes gum disease.

Try to cut down on sugary and acidic foods as much as possible; if you consume them, wait at least half an hour before brushing to protect your enamel. When you brush, make sure to use fluoride toothpaste to defend against tooth decay.

General Dental Treatments

White Fillings

White fillings use composite resin material to repair the damage left by tooth decay, grinding or chewing hard foods. They are a popular alternative to silver, ‘amalgam’ fillings, which many find unsightly due to their dark, noticeable appearance. It is often quite impossible to spot white fillings as we colour-match the material to your natural teeth, making them a discreet solution that can last for up to ten years.

Like bonding treatments, we use a composite resin material for white filling treatments. This resin is layered onto your teeth and hardened using UV light.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are made of either metal or porcelain – they act as natural-looking caps that fit over the visible part of your tooth if it is broken, decayed or weak. Unlike fillings, crowns restore strength to your entire tooth, rather than just a portion of it – they are an effective way to improve the functionality and appearance of your teeth.

First, we prepare your tooth by removing any existing fillings and filing it down whilst you are under general anaesthetic. Then, we’ll take impressions to make sure the crown matches your teeth perfectly and place a temporary version whilst we create your permanent one. If cared for correctly, crowns can last for up to 15 years.

Dental Bridges

Bridges close gaps in your smile by replacing a missing tooth with an artificial one. The prosthetic tooth is bonded to your natural teeth on either side, creating a stable anchor. Bridges are often made from metal, although we will cover any visible surfaces in porcelain to ensure a natural, subtle appearance.

Bridges can also replace more than one missing tooth as an alternative to removable, partial dentures, although this depends on the strength of the teeth on either side of the gap.

Bridge treatment is a two-step process; at your first appointment, we will prepare your surrounding teeth and take impressions to create your prosthetic tooth. The lab will return this in around two weeks, at which point we will see you again to attach your bridge. If you clean your bridge thoroughly and avoid certain foods, it can last for up to 15 years.
