What Is a Clinical Dental Technician? Meet Stuart Caris at Able Denture & Implant Clinic in Camberley
If you're considering dentures, you may have come across the term Clinical Dental Technician, or CDT. But what exactly does a Clinical Dental Technician do, and how is seeing one different from visiting a dentist?

Mr Stuart Caris, Clinical Dental Technician, DIP CDT RCS (ENG), GDC No 161396
At Able Denture & Implant Clinic in Camberley, Surrey, our owner and Clinical Dental Technician, Stuart Caris, has over 30 years of experience in dental technology. He combines his extensive knowledge of making dentures with the clinical skills to see and care for patients directly.
For Stuart, providing denture care isn't simply about replacing missing teeth. It's about listening to patients, understanding their concerns and helping them find the most appropriate treatment for their individual needs.
What does a Clinical Dental Technician do?
A Clinical Dental Technician is a registered dental professional who has undergone additional clinical training alongside their technical qualifications in making dentures.
Unlike a dental technician who works primarily in a laboratory, a Clinical Dental Technician can see patients directly to assess their denture needs, discuss treatment options and provide appropriate denture care within their professional scope of practice.
At Able Denture & Implant Clinic, Stuart works closely with our dentists, collaborating on treatment plans for patients who may require partial dentures, dental implants or other restorative dental treatment.
One of the main benefits of seeing a Clinical Dental Technician is that the person discussing your dentures with you can also be the person who makes them.
Stuart is personally involved in making dentures in our on-site dental laboratory, working alongside our experienced dental technicians. This close collaboration between our clinical team and laboratory helps ensure that patients' individual needs and preferences are considered throughout their treatment.
Over 30 years of experience and a passion for getting things right
Stuart began his career in the Royal Army Dental Corps, serving for 15 years as a dental technician and laboratory manager at Army and RAF dental facilities in the UK, Germany and Cyprus.
His military background helped develop the precision, discipline and attention to detail that continue to influence his work today.
After leaving the Army, Stuart purchased Able Dentures from a retiring local dental technician. He later undertook further training and qualified as a Clinical Dental Technician through the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
With more than three decades of experience, Stuart has developed a deep understanding of denture design, fit, function and appearance.
He takes enormous pride in his work and is naturally self-critical, always wanting to achieve the best possible result for each patient.
A recent patient review summed up his approach beautifully:
“Amazing from the start, nothing too much trouble to get it right. Stuart is a perfectionist”
Helping you understand your options
Many people who come to see us aren't aware of all the treatment options available for missing teeth or uncomfortable dentures.
Some have been wearing the same dentures for years. Others have missing or failing teeth and aren't sure what can be done. We also regularly welcome patients who haven't visited a dentist for a long time, sometimes because they feel nervous or embarrassed.
Stuart takes time to understand patients' concerns and explain the different treatment options that may be available to them.
Sometimes the most appropriate solution may be new dentures. In other cases, existing dentures may be improved through adjustments or relining.
For patients who may benefit from partial dentures, dental implants or other restorative treatments, Stuart collaborates and coordinates closely with our dentists. By bringing together the skills and experience of our clinical and technical teams, we work towards achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients.
What matters most is helping each patient understand their options and receive the treatment that's right for them, rather than assuming that new dentures are always the answer.
We offer a free, no-obligation consultation where you can discuss your concerns, ask questions and explore the options available. There is absolutely no obligation to proceed with treatment following your consultation.
The difference of having your dentures made on site
At Able Denture & Implant Clinic in Camberley, we have our own on-site dental laboratory, where Stuart works alongside our skilled dental technicians.
Having our clinical team and laboratory working closely together is an important part of the care we provide.
Making natural-looking dentures involves careful consideration of the shape, size, colour and position of the teeth, along with how they meet when you bite and how they support your facial appearance.
Because Stuart sees patients himself and is personally involved in making their dentures, he can communicate their individual preferences and concerns directly within the laboratory.
He understands that dentures are personal and that every patient has different needs, expectations and facial features.
This close working relationship between our dentists, Clinical Dental Technician and laboratory team allows us to pay careful attention to the details that can make such a difference to the appearance, comfort and function of dentures.
A welcoming approach, especially if you're nervous
We know that visiting a dental clinic can feel daunting, particularly if you've had an unpleasant experience in the past or haven't sought dental care for many years.
Some patients worry about the condition of their teeth. Others have lived with poorly fitting dentures for so long that they aren't sure whether anything can be improved.
At Able Denture & Implant Clinic, we believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable asking for help.
Over the years, Stuart has established an experienced, professional team who share his commitment to providing high-quality care and helping patients feel at ease.
We take time to listen, explain treatment options clearly and answer questions. Our approach is open, honest and reassuring, with no judgement and no pressure to make a decision before you're ready.
We want every patient to feel listened to, well informed and confident about the options available and their next steps.
